Trauma Informed Care: From Introduction to Application, with Lynne Fadem

This presentation will provide information valuable to all, including educators, para-educators, administrators, clinical service providers, parents and advocates. Attendees will explore the definitions of Trauma and Trauma Informed Care (TIC) and develop an understanding of how it applies to supporting those with IDD. Multiple resources will be reviewed, including a structured action plan that can be implemented in school or clinical settings. Participants will then break into groups and apply the principles presented to a selected case.

After attending this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Define Trauma

  • Explain trauma Informed care and its importance

  • Name signs of trauma responses in those with IDD

  • Identify at least 3 sources of information to guide trauma informed decision making

  • Apply trauma informed thinking to an individual case

Lynne Fadem received her B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.A. in speech-language pathology from The Ohio State University. She is a Speech-Language Pathologist who has served students from preschool through age 21 with intellectual disabilities, autism and emotional disabilities at special educational schools in Maryland for over 20 years. Lynne first discovered trauma informed care through employer based training and witnessed a profound shift in her own practices and that of her colleagues.
